Arsenal's Debated Partnership Agreement with Visit Rwanda Is Ending In the Upcoming Season

The North London club has declared that its disputed sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June of next year.

Context and Criticism

This deal, estimated to cost around ÂŁ10m per year, was initiated six years ago and has since come under fire.

The backlash arises from Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 rebel group in persistent fighting in the eastern areas of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In February, Arsenal faced allegations of issuing a severe rebuff to the government of the DRC by declining to meet with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to talk about the deal.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda functions as a division of the the country's development agency, which is a government department.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal entered into and continued this partnership primarily to expand their African supporter base.

Nevertheless, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “mutually agreed” to go their separate ways.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the original goals of the partnership – promoting conservation and eco-friendly travel, inspiring millions of supporters to explore Rwanda, and creating a lasting foundation for visitor increase,” declared an official Arsenal statement.

The statement continued that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's goal of becoming an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while implementing grassroots football initiatives that have assisted numerous youth athletes and coaches enhance their abilities and promote increased engagement in athletics nationwide.

Leadership View and Supporter Response

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, portrayed the arrangement as a “significant journey” and stated it had been “driving forward” the club's goals.

But that is not how a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the activist organization Arsenal Peace Advocates staging protests outside the club's home ground during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against the French club in April's conclusion.

Activists unveiled a sign stating “End the Rwanda Deal” and provided wristbands to conceal the Rwanda branding on jerseys.

In the same month, the French champions continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

Meanwhile, the Spanish club signed a fresh deal for the identical duration that has resulted in the branding featured on the Madrid-based team's men's and women's shirts.
