Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The self-operating spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of space.
The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.
The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
