New Year's Partygoers Told to Bundle Up with Wintry Weather Predicted Throughout the UK
Forecasters are saying a frosty commencement to the new year, with snowfall expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Events Continue In Spite of Warnings
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are planned to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the weather service.
Fireworks Under Clear but Cold Skies
Across the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be low, making additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Widespread Advisories for Friday
As we enter Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.
- Transport is anticipated to be impacted.
- The public have been urged to leave additional time for travel on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on public transport.
The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Further
Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Public Health Warnings Issued
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this meant the weather was likely to trigger major effects across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
