That Grisly Animated Movie Conclusion That Lingers Audiences
Out of every adult-oriented cartoon movies I’ve personally viewed, nothing has lingered in my mind quite like the fear-filled conclusion of the viscerally violent and overwhelingly transgressive film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spanish writer-director crafted a dark, bleak and often savage world with a few small , forlorn hints of optimism.
Although Unicorn Wars appears as it stemmed from a drive to push animation further, the filmmaker explained that it was more an attempt to convey a widespread, cross-cultural theme concerning “the shared root of each battle.”
That message is conveyed by means of a group of brightly hued teddy bears , clearly inspired by a popular series of cuddly characters.
Growing up in a culture centered on militarism and the military-industrial complex, many of these creatures are consumed by exterminating unicorns, because of a religious scripture that tells them they used to be kings of the woods, until the unicorns drove them out.
Others did not entirely bought into the indoctrination, , would rather try out drugs or fornicate in the woods.
Unlike their friendly equivalents, these vivid animals have visible genitals , clear sex drives.
For a certain notably brutal, pessimistic creature, the bear named Bluey, the conflict against the unicorns turns into a path to power — and specifically to authority over his softer, kinder brother Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor , an obvious antisocial figure , and as fear overcomes his group and claims his comrades one by one, he grabs increasingly influence personally, through ever more gory, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, the unicorns are experiencing their own nightmare, in the form of a spreading, harmful creature in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it seems like a comedy,” the filmmaker stated. “But then it turns into a more serious and sorrowful film. And by the end, it transforms into a horror film.”
The Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like one of the more quirky movies by a renowned filmmaker, that uncover a wicked pleasure in allowing cartoon characters curse, shoot each other, or engage sexually.
Then it turns into something more like a more grim movie from that director, with increasingly explicit brutality , a tangible connection to genuine horror of war.
By the end, it becomes a full-on extreme drama bloodbath.
The horror that makes this a perfect Halloween watch begins well before than that description suggests.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the most dedicated fans of gore, for fans of intense movies who want to view a film they’ve never seen on-screen before, and can endure a plot which delivers absolutely no punches.
View it in a dark room without any distractions, and that ending will dig deep within you and linger.
