The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead for World Cup Despite Objections by Egypt and Iran
Plans for LGBTQ+ rights events and activities throughout the city amid the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament will continue as scheduled, despite the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations voiced strong concerns regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. These events will take place around the Group G match featuring Egypt and Iran on 26 June. Additionally, FIFA will permit rainbow flags to be brought into the match venue.
“As the local organising committee, our role is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” said the vice-president of communications.
Legal Background Behind the Objections
Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, while in Egypt, morality laws are often used to target and prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association declared it refused to be linked to events that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “objections against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance on Flags and Banners
The international federation holds operational control of stadiums during games. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with overtly political content, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was in effect at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.
- The Pride Match concept was devised to showcase the city's proud history of advocating for inclusion and equality.
- A design contest is underway to produce artwork to commemorate the occasion.
- Organizers have pledged to making sure all fans are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest during the 48-team competition.
The Pacific Northwest hosts a significant largest communities of Iranian descent, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities from every competing country. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors encounter the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our region,” the statement added.
