The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
