Zohran Mamdani confirms he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his run for office.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, did not confirm he would live there right away following his victory in November.
"The choice rested on our family's safety and the importance of dedicating my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a district famous for its vibrant cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will always live inside me and the work I do," he added.
Campaign Controversy
In his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he is from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment far removed from his previous Astoria home.
With its cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's original era.
The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
